This temple was originally a hossō sect temple built in 738 ad during the reign of emperor shōmu, at the behest of empress kōmyō. it was later restored in 1717 by shin'yo butsudō shōnin and converted to the jōdo sect. it was later destroyed by fire during wartime, and the current building is said to have been constructed in 1703.
