Takatsuki is a place associated with takayama ukon, a famous christian daimyo. ukon, the lord of takatsuki castle, was exiled to manila when tokugawa ieyasu issued an edict banning christianity, and he spent the rest of his life there. the takayama ukon memorial chapel was built at the catholic takatsuki church in imitation of the cathedral of our lady in antipolo, a suburb of manila, where ukon died. in the chapel's courtyard stands a marble statue of ukon kneeling and praying towards the church.
