Nijo castle (former imperial villa)
Nijo castle was built by tokugawa ieyasu to protect the kyoto imperial palace and to serve as lodging for the shogun during his visits to kyoto. during the time of the 15th shogun, yoshinobu, he declared his intention to restore imperial rule at the ninomaru palace. the castle boasts magnificent beauty, including the opulent karamon gate and the national treasure ninomaru palace. the screen paintings by artists such as kano tan'yu are also not to be missed.
