Adashino nenbutsu-ji temple
Adashino, which was also written about by yoshida kenkō in his "essays in idleness," has been famous as a burial ground since ancient times. kūkai, kōbō daishi, built nyōrai-ji temple to commemorate the deceased, and later honen shōnin opened a pure land buddhist practice hall there, renaming it nenbutsu-ji temple. within the temple grounds, there are approximately 8,000 excavated stone buddha statues and stone stupas. at the "thousand lantern memorial service" held on the last saturday and sunday of each year, candles are lit around the stone buddha statues, creating a fantastical scene under the summer night sky.
