Hokura shrine
The view of osaka bay from in front of this shrine is magnificent, making you forget the fatigue of climbing the hill. this shrine is the site of ancient rock-stone rituals, and rock formations are scattered throughout the grounds, including around the main hall. numerous stone tools and yayoi-period pottery used for rituals have been unearthed, and important cultural properties such as a bronze halberd, as well as ritual pottery and glass magatama beads have also been discovered, said to be remnants of ancient beliefs. the stone lantern in front of the torii gate, said to be the oldest lighthouse in japan, was used in ancient times to light bonfires and pray for the safety of ships passing through the open sea off chinu, and served as a landmark for navigation. it is called nada no hitotsubi (one fire of nada) and is still lit every night.
