Daikaku-ji temple is the head temple of the daikaku-ji branch of the shingon sect. during the kamakura period, emperor go-saga, emperor kameyama, and emperor go-uda successively entered the temple, forming the daikaku-ji lineage of the southern court, and clashing with the northern court of the jimyoin lineage. for this reason, it is officially called the former saga imperial palace daikaku-ji monzeki. the shinden, shoseiden, mikage-do (shingyo-mae-den), yasui-do, and hondo (godai-do) are connected by corridors, and the view of osawa pond can be enjoyed from the hondo. the approximately 240 screen paintings by the kano school and others in the shinden, shoseiden, etc., especially the peony and red plum paintings in the shinden, are not to be missed.
