It is said that mefu shrine was founded when, in the past, when the villagers were suffering from famine, takahime-no-kami, the daughter of okuninushi-no-mikoto, and ama-no-masahiko-no-kami came and taught them hemp weaving and rice cultivation, and the shrine was built to enshrine these two deities. the grove of chinquapin trees surrounding the shrine is designated as a natural monument of the city.
